10TH ANNIVERSARY HEADBADGE CONTEST
By Lynette Chiang

What distinguishes a hand built bicycle from the mass produced? A headbadge! And a Bike Friday headbadge is long overdue. We'd like to invite our customers to submit ideas - just a rough scribble will do. Send them to us by post or e-mail a JPEG file. We've got some great ideas already tabled. They should capture the spirit of Bike Friday®. For example,a little suitcase with wings is one idea we like. The design may or may not incorporate the slogan PERFORMANCE THAT PACKS®. For inspiration, take a look at the fantastic retro headbadge collection of Pocket Rocket owner and Lord of Headbadges, Jim Langley, on his website (scroll down).

Jim gave us some pointers: "I thought I'd send two photos of the type of headbadge that I think is truly special. Both feature cyclists riding. You might be surprised how rarely this theme is used on headbadges over the years. I especially like it when the cyclist is riding around the world or on/around a globe. I think that's a perfect description of how Bike Fridays® can change you life and turn you into a globe trotter. One is very unusual in that the headbadge is the shape of a cyclist and it has incredible detail. You can clearly see the brake cables, chain links, toe clips & straps, goggles. The other badge is more traditional. What I like on it is the cyclist riding on top of the globe, not so much the "champion of the world" theme. Just the fact that the he's circling the world on his bike. If the globe looked more like the earth, it would be even more interesting to me. I thought you might enjoy seeing these and that they might give you some more ideas. I can't wait to see the entries."

Submit entries by APRIL 1 2002 and watch the website www.bikefriday.com to view the entries. We're going to ask you and Lord Jim to help adjudicate and the winner will receive $100 worth of Bike Friday® products, and a headbadge of course. All bikes made in 2002 will receive a headbadge to retrofit to their Bike Friday®, for a nominal extra charge. Post sketches to Bike Friday®, 3364 W 11th Eugene, OR, 97402, or e-mail to [email protected].
