BFCA CHAPTER CHATTER
Is the BFCA the best idea since H-bars? Does a chicken
have hard lips?
Since our last issue our little wheel club has grown to 8 chapters, with Davis
CA and Sand Diego CA hitting the pavement just this year. Remember you can see
the scheduled rides in the Bike
Friday® Event Calendar. Now that BFCA is gathering momentum we're thinking
about all kinds of neat things we can offer members. For example, from now on
all BFCA members get 10% off accessories at BF (cannot be combined with any other
discounts). We're also thinking about a special embroidered jersey badge, regular
newsletter, and making it a priority to come and ride with you as well as show
bikes. Remember, the leader gets the referral fee if a new BF customer buys -
$50 on a custom bike, $25 on a stock bike. Please feel free to tell us what would
keep your group rolling. If you are interested in starting your own BFCA Chapter,
call us on 1-800-777-0258, e-mail [email protected]
and we'll e-mail you the Chapter Charter. Leaders get a complimentary Bike Friday®
Homecoming Jersey which Club members can buy for $40 (usually $75).
So without further ado, let's hear from some of the chapters:
EUGENE CHAPTER: Last week our First Sunday of the
Month "Join the Fold" included several big-wheel riders who saw our
ride advertised in the local calendar section of the paper. We had soup and bread
back at the shop and we're now thinking of things like talks, slide presentations,
maybe even a belly dancing demonstration (just kidding). It's a fixed 18 mile
route, a tradition, so latecomers can catch us on the way. And it's an excuse
to ride, even it if it's just once a month!
BOSTON CHAPTER: The BAGG Cyclists (Boston Area Green
Gear Cyclists) initiated our monthly rides on November 25, 2001. The response
to date has been wonderful ! We have met many current and future BF owners and
explored some of Boston's diverse areas. Various BF models have been in attendance;
Llamas, Rockets, AirGlides, a Q and Crusoe. Included, of course, was singing the
praises of Bike Fridays®. In addition some "other" small bikes,
recumbents, and "big" bikes have come along too. Our 2002 schedule of
rides will venture beyond Boston (including day trips to RI, CT, ME, NH, and VT)
so if you are in the Boston area on the 4th Sunday of the month and want to go
on a mellow afternoon ride, drop us a line at [email protected]
and we'll be sure to clue you in on our meeting spots and rides. Rides are organized
by Anna Kleinfeldt and/or Bill Redford.
SAN DIEGO CHAPTER (Peggy and Kerry Kunsman, Traveler
XL) We had a nice ride on Saturday, around the Bay. It was short, only 11 miles.
We had 6 people. Kerry and I, Jim Gardner, a married couple, Alice and John Norris,
and Jerry Fitzsimmons. The Bike Friday® group was nice and fun. The potential
is great to travel with these people. We'll see what happens. Next month we are
starting at Mission Bay and riding to the lighthouse at Point Loma. Probably about
18 miles. We've done it before and the others sounded stoked, no pun intended.
SANTA CRUZ, CHAPTER (Dan
Fallorina and Anna Kammer).
The few rides have been fun for all. Everyone has really
enjoyed the ride through the Redwoods, strawberry fields
and orchards to Gizdich's ranch and back. I think everyone
enjoyed the pies more than anything else. The ride is
only around 20 miles or so and is relatively easy. If
you want longer and more challenging rides we can definitely
provide you with some good training. There are various
roads in the area that can prepare you for any type of
century or double. I can give you plenty of tips. I placed
8th overall in the California Stage Race in 1999. The
Californian Stage Race consisting of the three toughest
doubles in California (the Devil Mountain Double, Central
Coast Double and Terrible Two). The total elevation gains
are between 13,200 to 18,500 in one day! Not to mention
riding the 200 miles. Some of these rides are no comparison
to the Death Ride. The Death Ride 6 pass option is a piece
of cake after you ridden the Terrible Two. If you want
more tips for training for a century or double come join
us on our monthly rides!
