HOW TO TURN:
Always enter a turn in the gear you want to be in when you complete the turn. Example: you're about to enter a turn that will put you in a headwind as you finish. Shift down before you start the turn. If you wait until you're in the headwind it's like a slap across your body as you then gear down and takes considerably more energy. It's the same when you approach a hill. Shift down early rather than after you start the climb. If you shift down too much, no problem - it's easy to go to a stronger gear. How do you know you're approaching a headwind? Keep an eye on the riders ahead of you (if any) and see their reactions to the turn. Also, watch the trees: they are leaning, it indicates prevailing wind direction. If the leaves are moving you know the direction. Just as important is the reverse: if you are going
to pick up a tailwind coming out of the turn, then shift up as you enter the turn to take advantage of the boost immediately. The more energy I conserve on a long touring day, the more I enjoy dinner.
